Most homes can be made hurricane resistant for less than $1,000.

September 10, 2014 in Home Owners, Island Tough

Did you know you can make your home significantly more hurricane resistant with an investment of less than $1000?

Building codes have changed and older homes, typically those built before 1985, are generally not in compliance with current code specifications. The solution? Simpson Strong-Tie's family of connectors. With more than 50 years of building safety research and innovation under their belt, Simpson Strong-Tie manufactures Galvanized clips designed specifically to retrofit on any existing wood and/or wood and masonry structure. These clips have a full set of design values that you can use to ensure your home will be not only storm resistant but also earthquake resistant. The Safe Strong Home report explains how these connectors work together to create a storm and earthquake resistant structure.

These products can also protect older homes.

Most existing homes with a wood framed roof on top of a masonry or wood framed base can have hurricane clips installed post construction, making the home stronger and safer. The trick to making sure your structure is hurricane resistant is to install the correct number and size of fasteners as specified in the Simpson Strong–Tie 2013-2014 Catalogue. It's important to follow Simpson's recommendations closely. Leaving out only a few of the fasteners will reduce the clips performance and may impair your structure.

A relatively small investment will let you relax, enjoy your home, and have a little more down time. After all, that's what its all about.
